I'm not really sure to what degree this is really happening in Japan (you know how media likes to sensationalize things), but the fact that it is probably happening is kind of sad. According to the USA Today article, "More and more Japanese men and women are finding relationships too messy, tiring and potentially humiliating to bother with anymore.
